My Experience Clearing P0AFA and P1E00 Codes

My Experience Clearing P0AFA and P1E00 Codes:
I wanted to share my experience clearing the P0AFA and P1E00 codes on my 2013 Volt. After trying a few tools without success, I finally decided to follow the suggestions here and purchased the VXDIAG VCX Nano from vxdiag official web along with the GDS2 software. The GDS2 software itself didn't need to be purchased, as they provided a download link, but I did buy an online account separately.
Here's what worked for me:
I used a Windows 10 laptop and connected the VXDIAG VCX Nano via USB.
Opened VX Manager, then selected Diagnostics and launched GDS2.
Followed the steps to find the VIN, accessed the Hybrid Powertrain Control Module 2, and used the Clear Secured High Voltage DTCs option.
After clearing the codes, I confirmed that the car started charging again. The system responds slowly sometimes, so it's important to be patient.
I also checked the cell voltage; most were within the correct range, though one or two were slightly off. I'll monitor these closely over the next few weeks.
My advice to others trying to clear these codes is: Invest in the right tools and follow the step-by-step process. It saves you a lot of hassle and a trip to the dealer. I also posted my experience on a GM forum and gained some attention.
I strongly recommend purchasing directly from the official website (vxdiag.com), where you can get excellent customer support!
Good luck to everyone dealing with this issue!

Followed step-by-step instructions

About 8 months ago, my 2014 (149K miles) Volt first threw the P0AFA and P1E00 DTCs, and locked me out of charging. TorquePro would not clear my DTCs. I bought the VCX Nano device. It cleared the DTCs easily. I just got the P0AFA code again, and tried to use the dongle again, but it just kept telling me "License expired. Please update VCI!"

I used the "Chat" (leave a message and they email you back) feature at vxdiag.com, and they quickly responded with instructions on how to update the VCX software. I tried to do that using the wireless connection to the dongle, but it just kept giving me an "Update license failed" message. I thought to directly connect the laptop and dongle with the USB cable, while connecting the laptop to the internet via wiFi -- and it worked! I clicked on the VX program's "Firmware Update" button, and it showed the update from 1.9.1.0 to 1.9.4.3, then it loaded license update, and I was back in business.

I followed step-by-step instructions, and the DTC cleared.

Be patient!! It will work.

Make sure you install the VX Manager software BEFORE you connect it to your computer. It was a PITA to set up, but after all of it, it worked like a charm. Saved me a fortune from towing it to the dealer and it worked with a USED PCM. Would use and buy again!!!! Would have liked to had the WIFI version though this one is USB wired. Do not worry about all of the GM software on the USB drive included with the VCX Nano. All of the pertinent software will be installed when you go to ACDelco Techconnect for the flash package for your car. It will update a few times before it will actually bring you to the vehicle selection screen. Be patient!! It will work.

Hello,

Thank you for your support and feedback! We're glad to hear that our device saved you a lot of costs. Regarding the WiFi version you mentioned, we do offer a WiFi version of the NANO for GM(https://vxdiag.com/products/vxdiag-vcx-nano-for-gm-opel-diagnostic-tool-wifi-version). Feel free to take a look, and if you have any questions or needs, please don't hesitate to contact us!

Just over $100

You can get a Tech2 Diagnostic Interface for $800+ or this handy passthrough adapter, used with your laptop for just over $100. It is not intuitive and I'd recommend checking somewhere else for instructions on how to use it. As far as the software on the included USB, only install what you need as some software is used for older GM, the other for newer. If you're worried about sketchy software, install it within a VM. Like others, I was successfully able to passthrough the USB device using VMWare and perform the work I needed done. You might need an ACDelco subscription ($45/VIN/2 years) to make the changes you want. This is a GM decision so save the one star reviews for them and their DRM. Even with paying that, I avoided a tow to the dealership along with the one week wait for an appointment, restoring functionality after a faulty 'protected codes' in my Chevy Volt.

Hello,

Thank you for your detailed feedback and for clarifying some important points for other users! Yes, our device does require software usage, and for certain specialized functions, users may need to acquire an online subscription on their own. We appreciate you highlighting this, as it helps set the right expectations for others. If you have any further questions or need assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out to us!
